Basic Function

The Data Analyst responsibilities include data mining, report and dashboard development; supporting processes to ensure that data is able to be utilized more effectively for evidence-based decision-making; and assisting faculty, staff and administrators in collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating college data. The Data Analyst position reports to the Institutional Data and Analytics Manager in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

Basic Responsibilities and Authorities


Collaborate with college departments to use existing data to support evidence-based decision-making, and identify areas of opportunity for innovation and change.

Identify and gather data sources for users' needs, translate and document the requirements using appropriate reporting and data use standards, and in a clear and concise manner.

Continuously cultivate expert content knowledge of the college's data infrastructure to ensure the college's ability to meet mandatory state and federal reporting requirements and deadlines.

Ensure a high level of accuracy, security, and consistency and clarity of data presentation in ad-hoc, standard research requests, and state and federal reports.

Support data integration from multiple sources, extract and transform data, and conduct data cleansing if necessary.

Create and maintain reporting standards and related database objects as necessary to address emerging user requirements.

Collaborate with Institutional Effectiveness team to regularly review data elements, to create and maintain standards for documentation, and to analyze for and implement process improvements.

Design and maintain recurring reports, and custom, on-demand summary reports using the college's business intelligence reporting application and enterprise data warehouse, and develop related database objects.

Assist in planning and executing data self-service models to meet the needs of the college departments through design, review and maintenance of reports and dashboards.

Perform other job-related duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry Level Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Statistics, Data Science.

One or more years of related work experience, including while as an undergraduate and graduate student, in data analysis, database reporting, or data management.

Proficient with query creation in Structured Query Language (SQL) against a relational database.

Experience with R and survey software (Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, etc.)

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Proficient with data analysis, database management, and data analysis practices.

Strong attention to detail.

Strong organizational and prioritization skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with others.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Oracle database and Toad for Oracle.

Experience with business intelligence reporting tools, preferable Evisions' Argos.

Strong understanding of the use and application of data within an institution of higher education.

Experience working in an institution of higher education, particularly in the institutional effectiveness function.

Familiarity with federal and/or state compliance reporting processes within public higher education.
