Summary:

The Counselor role involves overseeing all aspects of a patient's treatment, ensuring coordination and continuity of care from admission to discharge. The primary focus is on providing comprehensive psychological therapy to address addiction causes and effects through substance abuse counseling. Essential functions include interfacing with the clinical team, assessing counseling needs, diagnosing substance abuse, preparing treatment plans, providing counseling services, and participating in multidisciplinary teams. The role also involves documentation, maintaining patient caseloads, coordinating support services, and facilitating family therapy. Competencies include adherence to policies, confidentiality guidelines, legal knowledge, diversity commitment, crisis management skills, and the ability to build professional relationships. Specific Indiana requirements mandate counselors to be credentialed under the Department of Mental Health and Addiction.

Essential Functions:

Interface with the clinical team.

Assess counseling needs of patients.

Diagnose substance abuse based on DSM and ASAM criteria.

Obtain relevant previous records.

Prepare substance abuse counseling portion of treatment plans.

Provide specified counseling services.

Develop discharge/continuum of care plans.

Participate in multidisciplinary teams.

Document all relevant services and information.

Maintain patient caseload and perform case management duties.

Coordinate support services for patients and families.

Reassess patients and revise treatment plans as needed.

Facilitate family therapy.

Coordinate with referral sources.

Intervene in crisis situations using a multi-disciplinary approach.

Carry out administrative and clinical functions.

Attend team meetings and complete required training courses.

Indiana Specific Requirements:

• Credentialing under the Department of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA).
• Acceptable credentials include Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor, Psychologist, Physician, Advanced Practice Nurse, or Certified Nursing Specialist.
• Alternatively, credentials from nationally recognized bodies such as Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Consultant (CADAC), Addiction Professional in Training (APIT), Certified Addiction Counselor (ICAC), National Certified Addiction Counselor (NCAC), or Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) are acceptable.
