TITLE: Coordinator of Academic Success for STEM

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT (salaried)

DEPARTMENT: Student Success and Engagement and Title III-F, HSI STEM

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Academic Success for STEM and Title III-F Activity Director

HOURS: Full-Time (37.50 hours/week)

PRIMARY PURPOSE//POSITION SUMMARY:

The Coordinator of Academic Success for STEM will work within the Academic Success Center and collaborate with the Title III-F Activity Director, other Title III-funded staff, and a variety of campus-wide stakeholders to implement the "Improve STEM Services, Strengthen Teaching and Learning, Fill Program Gaps" project, a 5-year grant funded by the Department of Education. With the funding of this position, Dominican University seeks to address barriers to success for undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs, including health sciences disciplines, with an emphasis on increasing success among Hispanic and first-generation/low-income students. The Coordinator of Academic Success for STEM will be a member of the cross-departmental Student Care Team that provides wrap-around support, with a focus on students in STEM majors/courses. In addition, the Coordinator of Academic Success for STEM will support retention, persistence, and degree completion by creating and managing progress portfolios for students in STEM majors. There is an expectation of experience working with post-secondary students in STEM courses and genuine enthusiasm for serving Hispanic and first-generation/low-income students. The Coordinator of Academic Success for STEM will meet performance measures and deliverables in accordance with federal regulations, program requirements, and Dominican University policies and procedures. This is a grant-funded position, with funding available for up to five years.

JOB COMPONENTS//PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Case Management (60%)

  1. Develop and maintain STEM student case folders, which will include information regarding alerts, service access, and progress
  2. Train with the Associate Director of Academic Success and serve on the Student Care Team, participating in regular case manager and Academic Success Center staff meetings
  3. Conduct initial outreach and craft support plans in response to alerts based on students' needs
  4. Identify student touchpoints, conduct student intake meetings, identify student needs/concerns and effective supports, refer to on campus and community professional supports with communication to students, advisors, and faculty as needed
  5. Document interactions and recommendations for review of Associate Director; refer students in crisis to the Assessment and Care Team
  6. Provide academic coaching and support to students in STEM courses with knowledge and oversight of STEM-specific resources, tools, and strategies

STEM Programming and Coordination (40%)

  1. Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Academic Success for STEM, residence life, and other Student Success & Engagement staff on the development of STEM living/learning community (arranging logistics, developing programming)
  2. Support co-curricular STEM programming, mentoring, and development in collaboration with the Assistant Director of STEM Success and stakeholders across the University
  3. Consult regularly and work closely with the Title III-F Activity Director for guidance regarding the implementation of project activities, collection, and analysis of pertinent data - and preparation of program objectives reports.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in science or math education or related field
  • Experience with academic support (i.e. coaching, counseling, or tutoring), holistic support, or student interventions
  • Experience working with students and an understanding of STEM coursework
  • Broad community or university experience with Hispanic and other under-represented students and services that fit their needs

Required knowledge, skills, abilities

  • Bilingual: Spanish and English
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters related to the position
  • Ability to work in a team and independently with creativity, professionalism, and a positive attitude
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop, organize, and independently manage a variety of projects simultaneously and meet all required deadlines
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and OneDrive

Preferred education, experience, knowledge, skills

  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Experience with student support case-management technologies; Pharos/Jenzabar preferred
