Job Summary/Basic Function:
To review faculty publications, translate key findings in a way that will be interesting to nonexperts and pitch them to outlets that will further the impact of faculty research and enhance the reputation of the College of Business and Economics and Boise State University. Generate positive media coverage within and outside of the university in collaboration with university media relations using any and all media outlets available.

Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees. Typically hold a Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Essential Functions:
60% of the time the Content Writer will:

  • Research, write, edit and proof stories that explain the value and impact of faculty publications for internal and external publications in accessible/laymen's language (including social media). Determine how to present the narrative through all means and determine which stories to pursue for which media, including The Conversation. The Conversation is a prime example of an outlet that will increase the impact of faculty research.
  • Develop and maintain relationships, exchange information and work with faculty and staff.
  • Develop and maintain a network with media representatives, business community members, campus partners (such as the Office of Communications and Marketing and the Division of Research) and web-based information dissemination services.
  • Field internal and external requests for faculty topic experts and facilitate a connection.
  • Assist in communication of strategies or messages from senior leadership.

35% of the time the Content Writer will:
  • Produce high-quality content that aligns with COBE goals and objectives.
  • Engage in the development of marketing campaigns that will advance the reputation of COBE among various internal and external constituencies.
  • Uncover newsworthy stories pertaining to COBE faculty, staff, students, alumni and events for distribution through various media outlets, including social media.
  • Interview and collaborate with COBE leadership, program coordinators, faculty and staff to gather thorough and accurate background information.
  • Assist with consistent development and distribution of COBE news to internal and external audiences by collaborating with COBE and university communications personnel.
  • Stay current with local, national, and international affairs related to COBE faculty research.

5% of the time the Content Writer will:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
  • A proven track record of time management and self-directed writing and editing projects
  • Ability to converse with faculty about their research, translate it to readers outside of academia and pitch it to outlets such as The Conversation and other publications so that the research has societal impact.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external media and connect them to stories, ideas, etc.
  • Knowledge and ability to use a variety of social media to create, communicate and disseminate information.
  • Ability to act and think strategically.
  • Experience using word processing and basic web content management materials.
  • Demonstrable ability to translate complicated scientific and research ideas into complete, easy-to-understand narratives, videos and graphical presentations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism, technical communication, communications or related field.
  • 2 years of professional level experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
  • A proven track record of time management and self-directed writing and editing projects
  • Experience using word processing and basic web content management materials.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary ranges from $44,570 to $52,430 depending on experience.
