Communications Associate
The ACCELERATE program is led by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and works to deliver services for comprehensive HIV prevention and treatment targeting key populations in India. ACCELERATE works closely with the Indian Ministry of Health to provide technical assistance to National HIV/AIDS programs in India.

We are seeking a Communications Associate to create thoughtful and engaging content and manage projects that amplify the mission and work of ACCELERATE. The Communications Lead will also support integrating ACCELERATE communication efforts with those of other initiatives at Hopkins doing work in India.

Reporting to the Chief of Party, the role will generate and execute cross-platform communications plans and develop strategic messaging. They will work closely with communication staff in India to execute communication plans and track the dissemination of communication materials.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Formulate short- mid-, and long-range communications strategy for ACCELERATE
  • Develop social media communication strategy for content posted on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter)
  • Work closely with India staff to execute social media communication strategy
  • Improve ACCELERATE's evaluation of social media engagement metrics
  • Establish production calendars and maintain timelines
  • Promote the visibility of ACCELERATE success stories and events
  • Define consistent and clear language for ACCELERATE to use in public-facing content, which articulates technical activities in accessible ways for general audiences
  • Develop branding and language guidelines for India staff to follow
  • Support staff to comply to guidelines to improve powerpoints, reports, and public-facing documents using consistent and simplified language
  • Collaborate with ACCELERATE staff to contribute to quarterly reports to donor
  • Ensure that all communications adhere to JHU and USAID design guidelines
  • Expand the communications portfolio of ACCELERATE to improve the public facing outputs and communication channels. Support staff in India to generate these products and execute them.
  • Coordinate with other JHU communications teams to amplify messaging and integrate ACCELERATE communications with other India initiatives at JHU
  • Liase with JHU faculty or non-JHU affiliates as needed to contribute to communication initiatives


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field such as Communications, Journalism, or Writing
  • 4 years of related experience required
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into engaging messaging for key audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to write engaging content clearly and concisely
  • Experience with social media content development and evaluation
  • Additional education may substitute for some experience*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills and comfortable working in a team environment
  • Strong working knowledge of graphic design and social media strategies
  • Experience taking technical information and using it to drive communication strategy
  • Ability to manage multiple projects successfully
  • Proactive in anticipating communications needs
  • Sound judgment on prioritizing competing projects
  • Public health experience a plus but not required
  • Donor-funded project experience a plus but not required
  • Working in India or with initiatives in India a plus but not required


Classified Title: Communications Associate
Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PD
Starting Salary Range: $59,870 - $82,250 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
