Function:

  • Manages strategic procurement activities related to metals categories Includes commodity strategy, strategic sourcing, supplier performance management, risk and capacity management, contract and cost management, and operational management.
  • Develops and executes a global strategy for assigned commodity(s) and associated supply chain programs by leveraging innovative sourcing strategies, maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, collaborating with supply chain stakeholders, and adhering to quality control standards while balancing cost performance goals.
  • Leads cross-functional commodity team, mentors other teammates within the purchasing team, and may have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Identifies and drives key procurement initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Commodity Strategy Development and Management
    • Drives development of global commodity strategy for assigned commodity group to meet company and internal stakeholder needs
    • Leverages strategic sourcing processes to develop and execute commodity strategies and projects
    • Develops local and regional supply chains as needed to support plant operations with connection to global strategies
    • Develops roadmap to consolidate spend to preferred suppliers
    • Prioritizes commodity team projects and works to secure cross-functional support needed to complete projects
    • Ensures commodity team goals and objectives are achieved, including on time project completion
    • Engages with internal stakeholders to develop and influence commodity strategy that aligns with long term business objectives
    • Contributes to innovation by collaborating with best in class suppliers and new product introduction team to understand future development needs, developing menu of suppliers to meet future design needs, influencing and supporting sourcing decisions, and ensuring manufacturing transfer requirements are met
    • Leads utilization of market intelligence data to anticipate changes, safeguard supply, leverage purchasing power, and optimize performance
    • Develops and leads quarterly commodity or sub-commodity strategy reviews
  • Supplier Performance Management
    • Establishes and ensures suppliers meet key performance objectives, including owning supplier scorecarding for assigned commodity(s)
    • Leads strategic supplier business reviews
    • Leverages technology to create and present analytics that increase the company’s ability to effectively monitor and measure supply chain performance
    • Drives continuous improvement with suppliers, including cross-functional collaboration when needed
  • Risk and Capacity Management
    • Leads Intuitive’s Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) program for assigned commodity(s). Develops mitigation plans and programs for identified commodity, supplier, and part risks including sole sourced and critical supply base.
  • Drives long-term capacity assessments and forecast analysis to secure needed capacity from assigned commodity(s) and supply base.
    • May serve as project manager for key supplier capacity or risk mitigation initiatives.
    • Leverages problem solving skills and develops counter-measures to implement long-term solutions to identified problems.
  • Contract and Cost Management
    • Establishes contractual agreements for new partners and revise existing agreements to align with changes to Intuitive’s contract strategy
    • Performs ongoing contract reviews across assigned commodity(s) to ensure existing contracts align with business needs
    • Negotiates and manages long-term pricing agreements, quality agreements, master supplier agreements, and other contracts as required, leveraging company-wide objectives and driving key negotiation points to a successful resolution
    • Creates and leads delivery of annual cost reduction plan to achieve corporate objectives
    • Collaborates with suppliers and cross-functional team to develop multi-year pipeline of cost savings ideas to ensure sustainable achievement of cost goals for assigned commodity(s)
  • Operational Management
    • Supports plant purchasing by leading negotiations with suppliers to adopt and implement lean sourcing principles (e.g. kanban) to enable 100% material availability and optimization of on-hand inventory levels.
    • Embraces continuous improvement techniques to drive toward attainment of key purchasing metrics (supplier on-time delivery, quality, risk management, inventory velocity, and cost reduction).
    • May lead change management/change order implementation for complex projects
    • May create standard processes, train, and/or support purchasing team on standard work, in order to maintain consistency in quality and quantity of output
    • May support internal and external compliance audits
    • Improve system reports, create new reports/tools/automation improvements
  • Mentors colleagues within the supply chain organization and may have supervisory responsibility. Identifies process and training improvement opportunities and drives closure of identified gaps.

Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum BS degree or equivalent and minimum 10+ years of purchasing experience in a regulated industry manufacturing environment (medical device preferred). Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certifications: CPSM, CPIM, and/or PMP preferred.
  • Significant computer experience including MS Office products and ERP systems, preferably SAP and Agile. Strong Excel skills.
  • Proven track record of effective project management in a fast-paced manufacturing company (medical device preferred).
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience working with kanban systems and other lean principles.
  • Working knowledge of buying, material planning, master scheduling, and forecasting.
  • Experience managing metals spend /suppliers such as large-format machining, weldment and other metals commodities preferred and technical expertise in this commodity preferred.
  • Proven track record of leveraging strategic sourcing process across a global supply base, developing commodity strategies, and cross-functional leadership to implement commodity strategies.
  • Demonstrates concern for precision and thoroughness.
  • Proven ability to consistently achieve stretch goals and objectives.
  • Experience with people management and/or extensive cross-functional team leadership. Proven track record of promoting positive team culture and employee development.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects successfully and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience with proven track record of savings.
  • ~25% travel to both domestic and international suppliers.
