Cancer Center Research Lab [CCRL]

Position Description

Occupational Summary

Perform research and laboratory activities for the Duke Cancer Institute's [DCI] Cancer Center Research Lab [CCRL]. Provide professional service and care for patients including phlebotomy, EKG, and lab services.

Responsibilities

Clinical

Perform EKG's and set up Holter Monitors. Perform phlebotomy activities including obtaining blood samples from peripheral IVs and Central Lines. Perform and report vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate and temperature, as required.

Provide protocol specific service to patients within the age group 18 to 65 and over.

Communication

Respond to emails, phone calls, and all other communications promptly in a courteous and professional manner.

Actively participate in departmental meetings and others as assigned.

Maintain excellent effective professional and collaborative working relationships with the CCRL team, research staff, and clients including disease groups, principal investigators, regulators and professional colleagues. Work closely with the Infusion Room nurses and staff.

Study

Collect blood samples; prepare tissue and specimens for complex procedures. Prepare specimens for storage, distribution and shipping with appropriate tracking and documentation according to protocol specifications and Oncology CRU SOP's. Assist in tissue acquisition, including archive specimen and fresh tumor biopsy retrieval.

Monitor patient scheduling in systems such as Epic.

Enter study visit documentation into systems and databases such as MaestroCare and Smartsheet.

Data

Provide daily updates to the specimen tracking system.

Use electronic systems to document and retrieve information. Update the electronic database/s with specimen management and disposition.

Ethics

Know and follow policies, standard operating procedures [SOPs], regulations and protocol requirements that govern clinical research. Maintain Duke and project specific training and certification requirements.

Other work as assigned.

Basic Life Saving [BLS] certification from the American Heart Association or Duke approved equivalent course is a requirement of this position. Preferences:The ideal candidate will have phlebotomy experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires an Associate's degree.

Experience

One year of relevant experience. A Bachelor's degree may substitute for required experience.
