Position Summary

Set up, operate, or tend grinding and related tools that remove excess material or burrs from surfaces, sharpen edges or corners, or buff, hone, or polish metal or other material work pieces. All chip, grind, clean and salvage operations associated with preparing castings for machining or shipping. Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities

Tasks:

  • Observe tools to detect any problems, making necessary adjustments to correct problems. Inspect grinding wheels, stick grinders, and hammers for proper working order. Report any tool defect to supervisor.
  • Study work orders to determine product specifications, tool requirements, and operational sequences.
  • Remove excess material or burrs from surfaces, using grinding equipment.
  • May train new employees.
  • Perform daily housekeeping (sweeping, shoveling, painting, cleaning etc.)
  • May be required to operate industrial trucks (fork trucks, lift trucks, etc.)
  • Follow relevant work instructions and/or SOP.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

  • Uses the appropriate electronic or manual system to perform the work of the job or department.
  • May use computer systems to enroll in benefits and interact with other company data systems.*

Knowledge:
  • Reading, writing, speaking, comprehension and computer skills in the English language, typically developed through high school education or equivalent, with the ability to communicate effectively via all these modes.*
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing good customer services. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Production and Processing- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of goods.
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of basic arithmetic; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Must be able to comprehend the meaning of the calculation.
Skills/Ability:
  • Operation and Control- Controlling operations of hand tools or equipment (fork lift, conveyor belt).
  • Operation Monitoring- Watching indicators to make sure equipment is working properly. Monitor respiratory equipment for proper functioning.
  • Quality Control- Understand what good quality looks like. Advise supervisor of any observed defects.
  • Problem Sensitivity- The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Teamwork- Coordinating efforts and supporting coworkers to produce the best outcome.
  • Multitasking- Ability to move from task to task while maintaining concentration amid distraction.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability- Ability to adjust to new conditions and respond effectively to changing environments.

Physical Abilities:
  • Manual Dexterity- The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Reaction Time- The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.
  • Near Vision- The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Control Precision- The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the tools to exact positions.
  • Ability to perceive and interpret information through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch at a level considered normal for a healthy adult. Must exhibit good balance.
  • Maximum lifting requirement is 40 lbs.; any material of greater weight must be moved using machinery.
  • Ability to stand on hard surface for multiple hours.

Working Conditions:
  • Must wear required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, ear plugs, gloves, respirator. (Facial hair cannot interfere with fit of respirator).
  • Occasional outdoor exposure to hot, cold, and/or damp weather.
  • Daily exposure to dusts, fumes, and odors from an industrial environment.

Supervision:

This position does not supervise others.

During initial training, the incumbent will require close supervision, with supervisor contact several times per day. After demonstration of sustained full comprehension of work instructions, safety procedures, and general department knowledge, daily contact with supervision may reduce to once or twice per day.

Education Required:
  • High school education equivalent is required, vocational school is a plus.
Experience Required:
  • 1-3 months manual labor experience such as construction, garage or warehousing preferred.
