GENERAL OVERVIEW:

In the role as Certified Surgical Technician supporting the Endoscopy Procedural specialty, performing under general supervision of the Registered Nurse and Endoscopist and following established procedures, participates in direct patient care prior, during and after endoscopic procedures. Performs other duties related to the preparation of endoscopy instrumentation and equipment and maintenance of the Endoscopy Center environment.

  • Organizes and prepares equipment, instrumentation and supplies for endoscopic procedures.
  • Checks instrumentation, equipment and supplies for validation of processing, completeness, and function prior to use.
  • Anticipates changes and adjusts in case preparation per variations in procedures performed.
  • Assists with patient transport from admit area to procedure room and from procedure room to recovery room.
  • Assists with patient positioning and abdominal pressure as directed by the RN and/or Endoscopist.
  • Assists Endoscopists with procedure by assembling, testing and managing instrumentation and equipment.
  • Assists with specimen retrieval, labeling, processing and specimen reconciliation with RN.
  • Monitors and maintains standards of infection control and aseptic technique.
  • Assist with supply documentation and inventory management. Maintains inventory of specialty supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains process for preventative and defective equipment maintenance.
  • May assist with stocking and opening and closing procedure rooms.
  • Assist in the admit/recovery area. This includes but is not limited to, assisting patients on and off stretchers, assisting patients to the dressing room post procedure to prepare for their discharge and turning over stretchers between patients.
  • Assist in the admit/recovery area with attaching patients to the monitoring equipment as directed by the RN.
  • Assumes other related duties as needed.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:

    High School Diploma/GED required

    Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.

    National certification is required in accordance with Mass state law.

    Endoscopy experience is desired. Procedural experience is preferred.

    Ability to organize and prioritize work activities.

    Ability to follow detailed instructions.

    Skills:

    Knowledge of septic and aseptic technique and be conscious of both at all times.

    Knowledge of safety standards and hazards in the work environment.

    Knowledge of care and safe handling of endoscopes.

    Knowledge of care and safety hazards of all specialty equipment.

    Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses and all other personnel.

    Ability to recall past experience in order to anticipate procedural team needs.

    Ability to work in high volume environment under stressful situations requiring quick action and adaptability to rapid change and response.

    Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights and cultural/religious beliefs and age-specific needs.
