St. Norbert College, a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a Cashier for Ruth's Marketplace. This position provides excellent customer service and radical hospitality while reconciling entrance payment into Ruth's Marketplace (the main dining room for students) and other tasks to support the service of the student meal plan. This is an academic-year/9 month recurring position (summers off!) and generally works Monday - Friday, 11:45 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. and approximately five weekends per year.

Specific responsibilities:

Provide Radical Hospitality: greets and thank all guests entering Ruth's Marketplace, help educate guests on meal plan & departmental policies while maintaining the Sacred Dignity of all guests. - 25%

Reconcile multiple payment forms including cash sales, credit card, service order contracts, and One Card meal plan transactions with efficiency using POS (Point of Sale) and EMS (Event Management System) software. Maintain daily cash bag balances and receipts. - 30%

Provide clerical support including answering phones, data entry, filing and online searches for information. - 13%

Set up, clean up, stock, and replenish food, equipment and dinnerware during shift. Clean and sanitize all work areas, equipment and supplies. - 12%

Serve as the "Front of the house" (where customers are being served) supervisor on rotating weekends overseeing execution of meal plan and student staff in Marketplace. - 5%

Answer questions and respond to feedback from customers coming to the Marketplace in a courteous and professional manner. - 15%

Perform additional duties as assigned and attend College required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observes safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the College or governmental authority.

Supervision Exercised Over: 

  • 12 student employees every 6th weekend

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education -

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience and Credentials -

  • Less than 1 year of experience in an institutional or retail food service industry with 2 or more years preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and customers.

  • Ability to talk politely and resolve customer service issues.

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Knowledge of how to use a cash register and ability to learn upgrades as needed.

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and decisions in an expeditious manner.

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others.

Equipment Used:
POS (Point of Sale) equipment, PC, telephone, food carts, dish racks

Working Conditions:
Position generally works Monday - Friday from 11:45 am - 8:00 pm during the academic year.  Interruptions can be frequent at times.  Works approximately 5 weekends each year.

  • Position will have sedentary work while at the register and will also be required to move throughout the dining room occasionally to stock equipment and clean areas.  Position lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls no more than 25 lbs. occasionally.
