This position is the most demanding and responsible of the Operator positions. "A" Operators are expected to assume the role of Relief Shift supervisor during the absences of the Shift Supervisor. They are expected to be completely knowledgeable of all existing procedures in their area. They supervise lower-grade operators and are expected to assist the Shift supervisor directly.

They must show excellent organizational and leadership capabilities. Their ability to work with others is critical. They must have previously demonstrated stewardship for company interests, such as materials conservation, site security, and efficient use of manpower and equipment. They would ordinarily be described as a "take-charge" kind of employee and would motivate others on the shift.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Responsible for accurately receiving information at the beginning of the shift from the person they relieve and "passing down" information to their relief at the end of the shift
  • "Makes rounds" of their area at the beginning of their shift to assure themselves first-hand of the status of activities for which they are responsible
  • Responsible for working safely in accordance with safety rules, procedures, operating manuals, work permits, or special instructions and ensuring other operators reporting to them follow prescribed safety rules
  • Operates pumps, valves, reactors, agitators, dryers, boilers, compressors, chillers, and other equipment according to general instructions from the operating manuals and specific instructions from their supervisor
  • Assists the Shift Supervisor as directed and assumes a leadership role in recommending process and procedure improvements to the Shift Supervisor.
  • If directed, will take total responsibility for the chemical processing in several or all of the units in their area depending upon their level of experience.
  • Responsible for adherence to environmental requirements in their area. This may involve inspecting scrubbers, flares, vent condensers, rupture discs, relief valves, dike valves, sump pumps, etc. Immediately report any malfunctions to the shift supervisor
  • Responsible for knowing their assigned role in various emergency situations such as fires, run-away reactions, violent weather, and environmental emergencies
  • Trains "B" and "C" Operators as required.
  • Performs housekeeping chores to maintain a clean plant and healthy atmosphere
  • Initiates and monitors movements of materials and inputs information into computers. Makes control adjustments if previously authorized.
  • Fills and empties tank wagons and tanks using approved procedures.
  • Drums product or other materials if assigned.
  • Responsible for area maintenance work in progress and may train contract labor if assigned.
  • Participates in monthly inventory and ensures accurate results.
Minimum Requirements

GED or High School diploma is required. They shall previously have served as an Operator "B" and received management approval to advance to this grade. Continued training in SOCMA's Operator Certification, computer training, HAZOP training, etc., is presumed. They shall also be trained in report writing, particularly Incident Reports, SPC and quality reference PSM and Responsible Care training. Leader in safe practices, and procedures. standards, etc. Sets the example.

Abilities Required
  • Candidates must be able to enter confined spaces, ascend heights to 100ft, and perform under unscheduled emergencies
  • Must be able to handle drums of chemicals weighing up to 500 lbs. by rolling them on flat surfaces up to 20 ft
  • Must be able to carry 50 lb. bags for short distances up to one-hour duration
  • Must not be seriously deficient in hearing or sense of smell and must be able to wear a demand-style respirator
  • Vision must be correctable to 20/30
