POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under minimal supervision, the health services research analyst will play a leadership role in all aspects of data analysis, data management and report generation. The analyst is responsible for analysis of data from a variety of sources to support research projects and other efforts, within the School of Medicine, in other parts of the university, as well as with partner institutions (e.g., Cleveland Clinic). Data sources include, but are not limited to Medicaid data, Medicare data, cancer registry data, death certificates, Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, Ohio Medicaid Assessment Survey, the U.S. Census, and Health and Retirement Study. Prior familiarity with these data sources is vital to this position. The analyst will be integrally involved in research project design, quality assurance monitoring, and preparation of research reports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. In consultation with the investigators, and using data from the various data sources listed above, identify the study population, derive the variables of interest, and construct the analytic data set. (35%)
  2. Independently, design, write, debug, test, and document statistical programs using standard statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, and R. (35%)
  3. Carry out statistical analyses independently (10%)
  4. With minimal guidance, carry out writing, output interpretation, and other tasks associated with manuscript and proposal preparation. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Prepare documentation for all the steps involved in preparing the analytic file, including version control, and create archival datasets for later use by the investigators. (5%)
  2. Provide consultation for medical and graduate students working on large database projects in the areas of study design and data analysis. (5%)
  3. Define work flows and data flows associated with research projects and other projects as assigned. (1%)
  4. Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with department faculty and staff.

University: Frequent contact with faculty, research staff, and other staff who are involved in assigned projects.

External: Regular contact with outside consultants and representatives of funding entities.

Students: Occasional contact with, or supervision of, students, especially those who on projects that entail the above data sources.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No direct supervision of staff or student employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 3 or more years of experience in working with the databases listed above and knowledge of the Health Services Research field as it pertains to these large databases. This experience should include statistical analysis, statistical programming, and data management pertaining to Health Service Research.

Education: Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics or related field required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Statistical skills for data analysis, including analysis of longitudinal data required.
  2. Statistical programming skills using SAS, SPSS, and R required.
  3. Visualization skills using SAS, R, and Microsoft Excel required.
  4. Advanced working skills with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office required.
  5. Ability to learn new technologies quickly and without formal training required.
  6. Accountability/integrity, customer/quality focus, diversity/maturity, flexibility/receptivity, interpersonal relations, leadership/supervision, initiative, planning/organizing, problem solving, decision making, project management, self-development, teamwork, ability to work with minimal supervision required.
  7. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills required.
  8. Statistical skills for analysis of multivariate data and production of graphical output preferred.
  9. Skills using UNIX or Linux preferred.
  10. Strong background/understanding of medical terminology, clinical/translational/basic research, and clinical trials preferred.
  11. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  12. Abilyt to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment. Work requires regular use of a computer keyboard and mouse. Limited manual dexterity required. Work requires negligible physical exertion. No exposure to hazards.
