Department Information

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. Currently ranked 5th in the nation among Genetics Departments for NIH Funding, received in 2023, the department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Job Summary

This position will support all ongoing and future collaborations at Schwantes-An Lab including the investigators from the division of Cardiology and the division of Gastroenterology.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Curates and maintains up-to-date knowledge of programs used in genetic epidemiology, providing analytical support to Schwantes-An lab.
  • Conducts independent genetic analyses, prepares reportables for publications and presentations, and provides analytical support to some of the key collaborators to the lab.
  • Serves as initial analyst who intakes new genetic and phenotype data, doing the initial assessment of data quality, preparing shared reports on data quality, and cleaning.
  • Conducts initial set of analyses to provide baseline knowledge of the data for investigators to plan the next steps in their research.
  • Provides data management, design of databased, and maintaining database functions for Indiana Biobank, a systems-wide resource of genetic and linked EMR data, URDC, a research clinic for pediatric patients.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides advanced consultation and employs a variety of computational sequence analysis (mathematical and computing) tools to model and analyze biological data in support of researchers.
  • Accesses, extracts and prepares data for analysis, including combining data run on multiple platforms as well as externally generated data in support of meta-analyses.
  • Installs, configures, customizes, and supports analytical software for data on research clusters; develops advanced software and programming scripts for software and workflow systems utilized by researchers as needed
  • Reviews, as well as undertakes, performance and reliability assessments to ensure systems are performing to maximum productivity and scientific validity.
  • Ensures proper documentation of consultation, analysis, and quality control efforts; often contributes to grant proposal and report writing.
  • Researches, evaluates, makes recommendations, and guides the implementation of new and emerging technology (open source, software, systems), approaches, and best practices.
  • May serve as project leader; often provides guidance to junior peers.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in either a life science (biology, microbiology, biochemistry, etc.) or in computer science with a specialty in bioinformatics.
Preferred
  • Masters in Bioinformatics, Statistical Genetics, or Genetic Epidemiology.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years of research technology support, large biological data analysis, or related experience.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible for remote work or to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary

$69,752.00 - $79,752.00 per year based on experience and internal equity within the department.
