Job Summary

The AVP, Tax is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and compliance related operations of the Tax Department. This position will oversee all aspects of federal and state income tax compliance, guaranty fund analysis, and premium taxation. This role will lead a team in all tax accounting areas including preparation of annual and quarterly Statutory and GAAP provisions and tax balance sheets.

The AVP, Tax will report to the VP, Tax and will manage a staff of 8-10 professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of federal and state income tax compliance, guaranty fund analysis, and premium taxation including research and managing audits.
  • Partner with the VP, Tax and other senior leaders in Tax to lead the strategic vision of the tax team
  • Provide hands-on leadership for tax accounting areas including preparation of annual and quarterly Statutory and GAAP provisions and tax balance sheets.
  • Oversee a robust tax internal control process
  • Ensure timely reporting of all tax requirements for SEC filings, parent company, and other external entities.
  • Provide leadership and participation in a wide array of special projects, including, but not limited to: acquisition analysis, tax minimization through the use of tax preferred investments, federal and state tax incentives, implementation of Statutory and GAAP tax-related pronouncements, etc.
  • Provide leadership through a wide variety of technical issues, (i.e., Legal, Accounting, Actuarial, etc.) and incorporate the impact of these areas on the overall corporate tax position.
  • Provide effective communication on all issues related to taxes to Senior Management.
  • Co-lead departmental accounting and compliance automation efforts.
  • Oversee and Manage internal tax reporting functions.
  • Act as primary interface between the VP, Tax and tax department operations.
Experience and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax required; Masters degree a plus
  • Minimum 10 years experience working in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm
  • Minimum of 4 years of management experience leading a team
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant or LLM required
  • Experience with Onesource a plus
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Familiarity with tax software packages required
  • Strong tax technical and accounting skills including the ability to apply ASC 740 concepts to an insurance group structure and knowledge of statutory tax accounting
  • High level of intellectual curiosity and willingness to contribute ideas
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to foster teambuilding, act as a coach and mentor, and provide motivation
  • Strong analytical ability to analyze tax and accounting information
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tax software systems; systems, including web-based compliance and research related applications
  • Ability to research and write effective briefs
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to provide effective decision making knowing when to escalate issues

  • Some travel may be required (less than 10%)
