A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking a Director for the A.T. Still Research Institute. The position reports to the Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs. The Director will serve as a leader, innovator, and amplifier of clinical and translational research within the A.T. Still Research Institute (ATSRI) and its research centers, in support of the center directors, scientific members, and in sync with the broader University. Specifically, the Director will promote/oversee the visioning, administration, and advancement of research within the ATSRI; administer policies and procedures driving research productivity (e.g., clinical trial development, material transfer agreements between ATSRI and industrial/governmental sponsors, etc.); serve as a research mentor and collaborator to both faculty and trainees; oversee departmental budgeting, personnel management, and research strategic planning; promote/facilitate grant funding for research and scholarly activities within the ATSRI and the A.T. Still University (ATSU) research community; and lead/disseminate research via conferences and publications. The Director will also design and carry out administrative management and research advancement plans, timetables, and activities to facilitate maximum ATSRI operational efficiency and return on investment.

Work locale is negotiable (e.g., remote/telecommute options or University locales in Missouri, Arizona, or California).

Major Job Duties

The Director will work both in an ATSRI research administration capacity and in an ATSU research gap area of high priority (e.g., epidemiology, public health, secondary data analysis, survey research, etc.). Initial responsibilities include evaluating and re-imagining the structure and function of the ATSRI to more closely align with research and University-wide strategic planning goals, objectives, and outcomes.

The Director will serve as an advocate and accelerator for research and assist, mentor, and nurture ATSRI center directors, scientists, and members by analyzing productivity and outcomes to identify areas of need and support including, but not limited to, assistance in applying for and conducting sponsored research projects (both intramural and extramural). 

Monitor ATSU faculty research focus areas and identify/recruit faculty to become ATSRI scientists/members to facilitate a stronger collaborative research environment within the ATSRI and within the global umbrella of ATSU. The Director will support 3 existing ATSRI Centers: 1) Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Research Center (KCOM), Oral Health Research Center (ASDOH and MOSDOH), and Community Health Research Center (SOMA), plus other developing research Centers throughout ATSU.

The Director will serve as an ATSRI liaison within ATSU and the broader research community to ATSU research groups, administration, and basic/clinical/health professions faculty. Communicate with ATSRI center directors and administration regarding needs and support for ATSRI research of the highest potential. Oversee research resources and serve on research committees (both University and school-specific) to provide mentorship. Lead the ATSRI in communication and dissemination of research priorities, activities, and outcomes. Travel to and coordinate/participate in research meetings, locally, nationally, and internationally, as relevant.

Educator in Research: Recognize that ATSU faculty and ATSRI scientists/members vary in experience in research backgrounds. Identify areas needing support and develop research seminars/activities to educate and mentor faculty on the conduct of research, including but not limited to, the research process and obtaining funding and resources for research.  

Researcher: Continue to pursue his/her own established research areas of focus, in areas relevant to ATSU's strategic plan and the ATSRI (epidemiology, public heath, secondary data analysis into underserved populations, survey research, etc.). Present research via publications and presentation formats.

Job Responsibilities

Advocate for research growth within ATSRI and collaborate with ATSRI center directors and scientists/members. Encourage, facilitate, and develop research activities with basic science, clinical science, and health professions faculty across the University. Participate in relevant local, national, and international professional research societies/meetings as well as University research committees, as assigned. Work with the ATSRI center directors to provide mentorship to develop the research careers/pathways of ATSRI scientists/members, particularly for early to mid-career researchers.

Help advance and support research within ATSRI's 3 centers and provided support to 5 center co-directors, and ATSRI's research teams and membership. 

Administrative duties include: ATSRI staff oversight, budget oversight, ongoing support to ATSRI center directors and teams, advance the ATSRI through its External Board of Scientific Counselors (EBSC), contribute toward meeting the research goals/objectives in ATSU's strategic plan and the research division's strategic plan to support research, lead/grow ATSRI's University-wide Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Symposium (IBRS), oversee Research Nexus monthly seminar offerings, lead ATSRI's Clinical Researcher Development Program (CRDP interns), represent the ATSRI on the Interdisciplinary Research Committee (IRC), guide and assist with Division/ATSRI research surveys, produce ATSRI metric sheets annually, etc.

Research duties include: Add research capacity and output in a designated gap area (tied to strategic planning areas) such as secondary data analysis into "All of Us" (health disparities database) and "UDS Mapper" (CHC research database), secure external grant funding as lead/co-investigator, publish research articles annually, promote team science in the ATSRI theme areas, etc.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in epidemiology/public health, applied psychology, or other relevant research field.
    • Desired educational credentials include a terminal degree in a relevant field of research.
  • Expertise in research design/administration and a track-record of publications and grant funding desired.
  • Strong computer/software skills required.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple activities at once, quickly analyze/resolve problems, and be deadline-oriented.
  • Must be professional.
  • Proficient in computer/software such as Microsoft (Word/Excel/Access/PowerPoint); Google Docs; ZOOM and Google Calendar; Statistical Software; Qualtrics, SLACK and RedCap Software (desired, but will train); Internet resources.
  • Must be able to interact in a positive and cooperative manner with diverse individuals and organizations.
  • Requires confidence and efficiency in professional interaction and communication skills.
  • Must be industrious and a team player who can also work independently.
  • Must be tactful, assertive, detail-oriented, and highly organized.
  • Must be a self-starter and self-driven but also able to work as a team member.
