The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of injuries for the athletes who participate in the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) Adapted Athletics Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Athletic Training/Sports Medicine (60%)

  • Provide athletic and functional training services to student-athletes with disabilities in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and the Illinois Athletic Trainers Practice Act (225 ILCS 5/) and Rules.
  • Provide athletic training services for the DRES athletic teams and visiting Paralympic athletes including attendance at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary.
  • Coordinate the prevention, care, rehabilitation, and evaluation of all athletic related injuries and illnesses sustained during practices and competition, utilizing all the resources within the University and community.
  • Provide athletes with evaluation of physical status, injury evaluation, provision/coordination of treatment/rehabilitation and prevention programs, application of physical agents, instruction in proper therapeutic exercise, strengthening and conditioning, improvement of coordination and range of motion, return to playing sports and basic wheelchair skills such as balance and transfers.
  • Provide athletic training services at selected educational and/or competitive programs sponsored by the DRES including first response to injury of non-DRES athletes at home tournaments.
  • Provide athletic training services at wheelchair sport camps sponsored by DRES during the summer months.


  • Communication/Documentation (10%)
  • Maintain communication regarding the care of athletes between DRES physical therapist(s), team physician(s), McKinley Health Services and other medical professionals, as needed.
  • Communicate with the team coaches the status of injured athletes and work toward compliance with return to sport progression.
  • Maintain record keeping for all medical records, medical supplies, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries and illnesses.
  • Coordinate with team physician to provide pre-competition physical examinations and health updates.


  • Strength and Conditioning (10%)
  • Develop & conduct strength and conditioning programs that meet the fitness and sport specific needs of individual athletes and groups of athletes/teams.


  • Travel Coordinator (10%)
  • Perform travel management responsibilities for away competitions and events.


  • DRES Intern/Volunteer Supervision (5%)
  • Develop clinical placement partnerships with athletic training programs and provide supervision and instruction to athletic training/pre-athletic training students, graduate assistants, aides, and volunteers.
  • Assist physical therapist with maintaining appropriate Occupational and Safety, Health Administration guidelines for the work place.


  • University and Adapted Athletics Collaboration (5%)
  • Collaborate with the physical therapist in the development of fitness, health and wellness programs for athletes.
  • Collaborate with other athletic trainers and strength & conditioning specialists on campus and in the community to address and share best practices.
  • Collaborate in research conducted by UI faculty/researchers that relates to persons with disabilities.
  • Assist in working toward accomplishing the strategic plan of the university, college, and division.


  • Qualifications:

    Education:

    Required: Bachelor's degree in health-related field

    Preferred: Master's degree in athletic training or health-related field

    Experience:

    Required: one year in athletic training setting required, with Master's degree; Two years of experience in athletic training setting required with Bachelor's degree.

    Preferred: Experience with individuals with neuromuscular and/or orthopedic disabilities and in adapted sports and recreation is preferred.

    Training, Licenses or Certifications:

    Required: Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification; licensed or eligible for licensure by the State of Illinois, Department of Professional Regulations; and evidence of compliance with continuing education requirements established by the Illinois Athletic Training Practice Act and Rules is required.

    Preferred: National Strength & Conditioning Association's Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist best practices or two year of experience is strength & conditioning setting is also preferred.

    Salary and Appointment Information:

    This is a full-time position. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications with applicant's record.
