Associate Director Counseling Center
The Johns Hopkins University Counseling Center (CC) provides services to students in full-time graduate and undergraduate academic programs in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering, as well as the Peabody Institute of Music. The Counseling Center is part of the larger Student Health and Well-Being (SHWB) division. SHWB programs are dedicated to fostering a holistic climate of well-being for students by providing access to primary care, mental health services, and student disability services throughout JHU. With approximately 100 staff members, SHWB also includes a health education and promotions offices that provides well-being outreach and education as well as sexual violence prevention, support and response.

We are seeking an Associate Director of the Counseling Center. The person in this position will have duties and responsibilities that can be classified into 3 main roles: (1) as an Associate Director (AD) of the CC, (2) as the CC's Training Director, and (3) as a clinical staff member of the CC.

As an Associate Director of the CC, and a member of the CC's executive team, the person in this position will provide leadership and managerial oversight of the administrative, clinical, consultative and outreach functions of the CC. The person in this position will provide clinical oversight and consultation on sensitive, challenging and more serious clinical cases, in consultation with the Associate Director of Clinical Services, and will provide backup on-call emergency clinical services during the CC's regular hours of operation. The person in this position may assume responsibility for the clinical and administrative operations of the CC in the absence of other CC ADs and may participate in community-wide programs and represent the CC with external contacts.

As the CC's Training Director, the person in this position will manage, direct and lead the CC's training program, which currently is comprised of an APA-approved doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology. This role includes policy development and implementation; duties required to maintain APA accreditation of the internship program; recruitment, supervision, management and evaluation of the CC's doctoral interns; leadership and supervision of the CC's training staff. The person will work with the other ADs and Vice Provost in exploring innovated new training programs and offerings in partnership with other school and divisions within the university and health system

As a Clinical Staff Member of the CC, the person in this position will provide services to students in the schools and programs noted above which include but are not limited to: individual consultations (ICs), intake evaluations, brief and longer-term individual psychotherapy, couples and group therapy, daytime and after-hours on-call and crisis intervention, assessment for suicidal and homicidal risk, individual and group consultation, outreach programming to students and student groups and possibly psychological testing and interpretation. In addition, the person in this position will provide consultation and outreach programming to parents, administrators, and faculty and staff associated with the university.

Currently, this position will report day to day to the Senior Associate Director and be a part of the Counseling Center leadership team under the direction of the Vice Provost for Student Health and Well-Being. In the future, this position may report to the Chief Mental Health Officer or other designated senior leader.

This is an appointed position lasting for 12 months upon the date of hire, with the possibility of consideration for extension.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists in providing leadership and managerial oversight of the clinical functions of the Counseling Center, including, but not limited to all assessment, counseling, crisis intervention services, and risk assessment for violence and suicidal behavior
  • Assists in the development and implementation of CC policy and procedures
  • Provides clinical supervision and evaluation of unlicensed clinical staff
  • Provides administrative supervision and evaluation of licensed clinical staff
  • Manages, directs and leads the Counseling Center's training program, which currently is comprised of an APA-approved doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology
  • Provides clinical supervision and evaluation of doctoral interns
  • Provides supervision of the training provided by the CC's training staff
  • Leads regularly scheduled training related meetings
  • Manages the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of doctoral interns
  • If and when necessary, manages the probation and/or dismissal of doctoral interns, in consultation with Human Resources personnel
  • Develops and coordinates training seminars for the CC doctoral interns
  • Performs the duties required for maintaining APA approval for the CC's doctoral internship program
  • Stays up-to-date with national policy-related trends and state requirements regarding licensure to ensure that the internship program remains competitive and meets appropriate standards
  • Provides individual consultations, intake assessments, individual counseling and psychotherapy, group counseling, couples counseling and crisis intervention to JHU students
  • Provides daytime and afterhours on-call coverage
  • Provides outreach, and consultation services to the university community: including students, parents, faculty, staff and university administration
  • Engages in professional activities at the local, regional, and/or national levels
  • Performs other duties as necessary to maintain optimal functioning of the Center.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Doctorate in Psychology is required
  • Must be eligible to be licensed as a psychologist in Maryland and obtain licensure within 1 year of hire
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-licensure clinical experience, preferably in a university counseling center setting
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical supervisory experience
  • A record of administrative responsibility and experience, preferably in a Counseling Center setting

  • Commitment to improving the existing Training Program with innovation, new opportunities and programs for doctoral interns
  • Skill in expanding the Training Program to include trainees of different levels (e.g., Extern students) in all mental health disciplines (e.g., Social Work, Master's Level Mental Health)
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a Counseling Center team and with members of SH&WB
  • Commitment to one's own ongoing development of multicultural competence and social justice values as a psychologist
  • Excellent interpersonal and empathic skills with emphasis on sensitivity to issues of cultural diversity
  • Experience providing services and programs for diverse populations that have been historically marginalized or under-represented

Starting Salary Range: $71,510 - $98,410 annually (commensurate with experience)
