College of Education, Health & Society: The Assistant Research Scientist will participate in and/or develop a sustainable, funded research program in a targeted area of research or scholarship related to education in the fields of sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computing (STEM+C), including but not limited to, preK-20+ teaching and learning, cognitive and noncognitive barriers to student success, equitable and inclusive learning environments and instructional practices, teacher preparation and training, that advances the missions of the University, College of Education, Health and Society (EHS), and Discovery Center in a significant and substantial way. The Assistant Research Scientist will manage and provide leadership to research projects in their area(s) of expertise and independently carry out day-to-day activities related to projects and programs under their purview. The Assistant Research Scientist will maintain collaborative networks within EHS, across the University, and among the research community and may participate in educational activities of their affiliated department to the degree consistent with their research responsibilities.

The Assistant Research Scientist will:

  • Identify funding opportunities in their area(s) of research and scholarship that are aligned with the missions of the University, College, and Discovery Center. Independently and collaboratively develop and submit proposals for external funding, including all aspects of proposal preparation (i.e., development of research designs, proposal narratives, budgets, supplemental documents) with support from Discovery Center staff. Procure, lead, and manage projects to ensure efficient and rigorous implementation and superior outcomes. Ensure compliance with state and federal research regulations, monitor budgets and spending, and communicate staffing and resource needs or compliance issues to the appropriate Center Coordinator or Director. Develop, submit for approval, and maintain current protocols for appropriate human subjects' protections through the University IRB. Schedule and facilitate the work of research team members, if applicable. Provide training, direction, support, and oversight for junior researchers (faculty and staff) and graduate students on their research team, if applicable. Independently make and carry out informed decisions about day-to-day activities related to project work. Develop and maintain networks of local, state, and federal agency personnel and collaborate with appropriate professionals, government agencies, local organizations, and other stakeholders to facilitate current work and to initiate opportunities for future work. Enhance the visibility and status of the University, EHS, and Discovery Center through publications, presentations, and participation in professional activities at scholarly and popular venues. Maintain regular proactive communication with collaborators, research team members, research participants, and other project stakeholders. Independently produce or contribute to reports, scholarly papers, conference presentations, and other professional documents for publication or dissemination. Independently produce required reports and other documentation for funders and other constituencies. Travel to participate in project site visits, funding agency events, presentations and invited talks at professional/academic conferences or meetings. Other duties as assigned by the Discovery Center Director and related to EHS or the Center's primary activities.

Required: Doctorate or other terminal degree in education, psychology, a STEM+C discipline (sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, computing), or other related field that is aligned with the focus of the position, from an accredited college or university or the equivalent thereof; record of accomplishment in research and scholarship; demonstrated ability to develop a sustainable, funded research program; at least 3 years of experience developing proposals for external funding; at least 3 years administrative experience preferably in an academic setting; at least 3 years of experience leading research initiatives in a field that is aligned with those found in the College research appointment; at least 3 years of experience independently producing professional writings; at least 3 years of experience with standard quantitative and qualitative research methods; at least 3 years performing routine quantitative and qualitative data analyses, including use of standard analysis software; knowledge of university systems, operations, processes, and policies; ability to travel.

Consideration may be given to candidates with experience working in an externally-funded research center and independently managing research programs/projects; ability to work effectively in a team environment with diverse groups; ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks to meet goals in a fast-paced environment; demonstrated leadership skills; high-level communication, collaboration, and analytical skills.
