About UMass Amherst

UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.

Job Description

The Department of Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor with a specialization in Black feminisms and/or Black feminist theory. The department welcomes applicants in a broad range of fields, with a strong preference for scholars whose work takes a transnational or global approach to the Black diaspora. We especially encourage applications from those whose work crosses traditional academic boundaries.

The standard teaching load is 2/2 and includes one required course and one elective course each semester. Other duties include undergraduate and graduate student advising, a well as service duties to the department, college, and university.

Requirements

Successful candidate must have the Ph.D. in hand by August 2024. Scholarly credentials and some teaching experience in Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies, broadly defined, is required.

Application Instructions

Along with the application, please submit: 1) a letter of application, 2) a CV, 3) a writing sample (a representative article or chapter, published or unpublished), 4) contact information for three professional references willing to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf, 5) a statement of commitment to DEI OR a statement of how the principles of Black feminisms animate your scholarship, teaching, and work for universities and the field broadly, and 6) two syllabi, one for a graduate course, Contemporary Black Feminisms, and one for an undergraduate course on a subject of your choice.

To be sure of full consideration, application materials must be received by November 1, 2023. Questions about this search should be directed to the search committee chair, Laura Briggs (ljbriggs@umass.edu).

We are seeking talented applicants qualified for an assistant professor position. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration.

The university is committed to active recruitment of a diverse faculty and student body. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members. Because broad diversity is essential to an inclusive climate and critical to the University's goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will holistically assess the many qualifications of each applicant and favorably consider an individual's record working with students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. We will also favorably consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic degree and career.
