Buffalo State, State University of New York, seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Art and Design.
The Assistant Professor will teach a three/four course load of undergraduate and/or graduate courses per semester in Art Education and other college core courses as assigned. The Assistant Professor also will engage in scholarly research and/or creative activity, advise students, participate in department, program, college, and community service, as well as accreditation responsibilities (National Association of Schools of Art & Design and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) and writing art education curriculum.
The Art Education Program, within the Art & Design Department, is a critically and professionally oriented program, with a BFA in Art Education and a Post-baccalaureate certification-only program leading to a New York State initial visual arts certification, and a Master of Science in Art Education, leading to the New York State professional visual arts certification. Along with art education required courses, faculty members in the Art Education program teach service and/or foundations courses taken by Art & Design majors, as well as service courses taken by non-arts majors.
Art Education faculty members collaborate with the State Education Department and the State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA), as well as with Buffalo State's School of Education.
SUNY Buffalo State is the only urban, four-year comprehensive college in the SUNY system. Along with the BFA in Art Education, the Art & Design Department includes a BFA in Interior Design, a BFA in Art & Design (with choices from nine different studio concentrations), a BA in Art & Design, and a BA in Art History. Resources on campus include the Upton Galleries, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, the International Center for Studies in Creativity, the Center for the Development of Human Services, and the School of Education's Professional Development Schools Consortium.
Ph.D./Ed.D. in Art Education or M.F.A. in related visual arts field; extensive full time K-12 art teaching experience or equivalent; college-level teaching experience; a commitment to the preparation of art teachers, and an ability to model quality teaching.
We are seeking a strong generalist with expertise in contemporary issues in art education, such as emerging technologies, studio art, urban education, community engagement, social theory, studio practices, curriculum design, writing in the art classroom, and teacher research.
Experience with curriculum design, working with student teachers and an ability to teach courses addressing topics such as contemporary art criticism, new media, community arts, and the education of adolescents and diverse populations.
