The Department of Child and Family Development (CFD) at San Diego State University seeks applicants for a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position. The position will begin Fall 2022. Applicants must hold an earned doctorate by Fall 2022 in Family Studies, Child Development, Human Development and Family Science, Psychology (Developmental Psychology), Sociology, Social Work, Education, or a closely related social science field. The CFD department represents an interdisciplinary field of study with the basic assumption that development takes place across the lifespan in the context of the family, community, and public policy. We seek a candidate whose ongoing research and teaching will strengthen the CFD department's mission to prepare anti-racist, anti-bias, professionals to address contemporary issues that affect the health and well-being of children, youth, adults, and families.
The first overarching criterion for a successful candidate is a demonstrated record of success in teaching, serving, and/or mentoring underrepresented students. In terms of research, there are several areas of focus that would add breadth to the expertise of the department in terms of both research and teaching. Preferences will be given to candidates with expertise in human development and families science research and that advances any or a combination of the following critical goals: 1) anti-racist and anti-bias practices that can support the well-being of children, youth, adults, and families of color; 2) dynamics and resilience of ethnically/racially diverse and multicultural families; 3) diverse family structures (e.g., foster care families, adoptive families, single parent families, extended family systems); 4) LGBTQ+ families and family structures, or; 5) relationship dynamics/processes. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, including securing funding from competitive federal and private agencies, in addition to participating in the Department's undergraduate teaching program as well as teaching, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria for underrepresented populations. Underrepresented populations refer to the following groups: African-American, Latinx, Native American, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander, groups of varying abilities, women in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or any other group that has been documented as underrepresented in the candidate's academic discipline. Candidates that that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
