Position Summary:
The Assistant Director, Military and Veteran Services supervises the Veterans Assistance Office personnel and operations to develop and implement strategies to attract, retain, and serve military personnel, military dependents, veterans, and their family members (referred to collectively as “military and veteran students”) at the University of Idaho. To accomplish this, the Assistant Director assists military and veteran students with admissions, reception, advising, and other student services through graduation and career placement by coordinating and utilizing a wide variety of student support programs. The Assistant Director also serves as a School Certifying Official (SCO) for students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, leads a team of advocates for military and veteran students among the university community, conducts outreach activities to potential military and veteran students and stakeholders, and advises students on achieving educational and career goals. This position works under the Director of Military & Veteran Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM, Education, Business, or Social Science discipline
  • 2 years of experience working with military and/or veteran populations in an educational or training environment.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in program planning and implementation, or conducting independent research and presenting results
  • 2 years of experience facilitating academic support services, behavioral counseling, or non-traditional counseling programs.





Preferred Qualifications:
Education:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, human resources, or management.



Experience:
  • At least five years of active military service, or at least 15 years of National Guard/Reserve service, with experience in post-9/11 conflicts and knowledge of issues affecting post-9/11 veterans and their families.
  • At least two years of experience counseling either veterans’ services or a similar non¬-traditional student population in higher education.
  • Experience as a School Certifying Official.

Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of programs administered by the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA), including GI Bill benefits, Veteran Readiness and Employment, and Dependents’ Educational Assistance, as well as tuition assistance programs for active military and National Guard/Reserve.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:



Required Licensures, Certifications or other
  • Department of Veteran Affairs School Certifying Official within three months of appointment
  • Flexible work schedule including the ability to work occasional weekends and after regular business hours as holidays as needed to support university welcome events and ceremonies.
  • Ability to travel one to three weeks for occasional conferences, recruiting events, and retention workshops.
