BASIC FUNCTION

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Students for Student Success, the Assistant Dean of Students for Academic Success and Accessibility Services is responsible for the coordination of comprehensive academic support services for students with disabilities, including, but not limited to, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, neurological disorders, chronic health conditions, physical disabilities, such as auditory and visual impairments, psychiatric disorders that impact the learning process, and temporary disabilities. In addition, the Assistant Dean will assist with academic coaching and counseling for all students.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct, Coordinate, and Provide Accessibility Services

  • Formulates and develops policies and procedures regarding services to students with disabilities.

    • Conducts intake interviews, advises and orients student on accessing appropriate accommodations support services.

    • Analyzes disability related documentation including psychometric testing, medical documentation, psychological assessments, self-reports, and/or other relevant information to determine eligibility for appropriate and reasonable accommodations.

    • Plans, develops and implements programs which focus on success and retention of students with disabilities.

    • Maintains case files in AIM and confidential student record in accordance with FERPA and college policy.

    • Interprets and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws as they apply to disability and postsecondary educational environments.

    • Oversees implementation of academic accommodations for students, including making arrangements for and proctoring of alternative test taking, assistive technology (i.e., braille, books in alternate format, etc.), learning disability and autism/Asperger's support services (i.e., peer advising). Coordinates academic accommodations with students and faculty.

    • Oversees implementation of residential and other accommodations for students through partnerships with residential life, facilities, information technology services, and others.

    • Monitors students' academic progress and coaches, counsels, and advises students on academic related issues.

    • Works strategically toward increasing students' independent functioning in preparation for life after college.

    • Is knowledgeable about academic requirements, policies and major requirements to serve as a competent supplemental academic advisor.

    • Works collaboratively with the Admissions Office for early identification of incoming students who identify as having a disability and/or accessibility needs and serves as point person for those students.

    • Works collaboratively with and serves as a liaison to The Claremont College Services, Students with Disabilities Resource Center.

    • Secures the necessary support for students with disabilities, such as sign language interpreters, readers, note takers, books on tape, and assistive technology.

    • Establishes a community referral network of psychiatrists, psychologists, and community agencies for students with disabilities.

    • Provides verification for students requesting special accommodations on Professional and Graduate Standardized Exams.

    • Assists students with study abroad options and issues of accessibility to academic and other accommodations at the host university (given that ADA does not extend to other locations outside of the United States).

    • Tracks and analyzes data for students with accommodations and prepares semester reports for Student Success unit and the DOS

    • Tracks and monitor students of concern and maintain real time case records in Maxient and AIM systems.

Educate the College Community on Accessibility Related Issues

  • Develops and presents campus-wide educational programs for faculty, staff, and students.

  • Consults with faculty, staff, families, and students on different learning strategies and appropriate academic accommodations.

  • Consults with other college health care professionals on disability related student issues.

  • Participates in campus committees on disability related issues.

  • Instructs and advises students, staff, and faculty on assistive technology for students with disabilities.

  • Educates and advises the College on legal issues pertaining to federal compliance with ADA and Section 504 related to students.

  • Provides training to student leadership cohorts as related to Accessibility Services and academic coaching.

Academic Success and Dean of Students Support

  • Provides one-on-one and small group academic coaching to all students.

  • Works with students assigned for academic coaching in support of student success.

  • Works with the Student Success team to support initiatives designed to support the retention, graduation, and success of all students.

  • Supports data collection as connected to academic coaching and program development.

  • Works on initiatives connected to antiracism, diversity and inclusion.

  • Assists with large-scale DOS and college events as required.

  • Contributes to the General Academic and Student Success Services.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education: Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: Minimum 5 years of related work experience, preferably in a higher education setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

Knowledge of best practice in disability services, universal design, academic support services, academic coaching models, retention initiatives, academic advising models, federal legislation, student mental health issues, needs of special populations.

Must be able to multi task and have proven organizational skills, sound judgment, superior interpersonal skills, and the ability to use tact and exercise a high level of discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.

Must demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Must be able to follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects, tasks, duties and assignments.

Must be self-motivated and comfortable working with minimal direction. Individual must have proven ability to prioritize concerns and respond accordingly using sound judgement.

Must be able to work cooperatively with others and must be able to receive and respond appropriately to constructive criticism. Must display a positive attitude.

Must be able to operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and any associated professional and/ or department specific software.

Licenses: A valid driver's license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required. A valid driver's license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College's authorized driver's policy.

OTHER

Hours: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary and may exceed 40 hours per week due to needs of the College or division.

A CSA is a key partner in helping the College comply with the requirements of the federal Clery Act, the goal of which is to provide information about safety and crimes on campus. Because crimes are often reported to employees who are not law enforcement or campus safety officers, the Clery Act obligates the College to identify who on our campus is likely to receive such reports and inform them of this role and responsibility and train them on what to do with that information. As a result of this designation, upon hire, and periodically thereafter, you are required to take the Clery Act training course. Such online course will be assigned to you and will need to be completed within the first six months of your employment.

During an emergency, required on-site or remote Personnel provide services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the College, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect College properties.
