General Summary

The Assistant controller oversees the daily operations of the Accounting Department. This position partners with the Controller and CFO on financial accounting, reporting and strategic matters. The Assistant Controller will collaborate with the Controller and have responsibility for leading the timely and accurate production and distribution of internal and external financial reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other standards or regulations applicable to non-profit health care organizations, philanthropic foundations and joint ventures. The Assistant Controller will participate in the development of departmental goals and priorities that are consistent with organizational objectives. The Assistant Controller will lead a motivated, innovative, high performing, customer service-oriented team. The Assistant Controller will drive to maintain, develop, implement, and monitor compliance with internal accounting policies and procedures to ensure that effective internal controls are in place, that organizational assets are safeguarded and that all accounting transactions are properly recorded and reported.
The Assistant Controller will be responsive to the continuing data requirements for managing a high-performance organization, lead the accounting functions and be a key technical resource for the organization. In liaison with the Controller, the Assistant Controller will be responsible for the analysis and implementation of all relevant accounting, auditing, and financial reporting activities. The Assistant Controller will work collaboratively with other Finance Department leaders in the operation of the organization's accounting, accounts payable, fixed assets, payroll, development processing, grants accounting and cash / treasury functions, including oversight of professional accountants and supervisory personnel over the assigned areas of responsibilities.

Principal Responsibilities

The Assistant Controller will:

  1. Provide the leadership necessary to develop a "high performance" culture characterized by high morale, efficiency, productivity, teamwork, collaboration, innovation, and service.
  2. Provide essential support to the Controller to produce accurate and timely financial reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  3. Facilitate GL close activities: coordinate with finance personnel in the fulfillment of all ledger closing activities; oversee the creation and posting of journal entries (accruals, actual, adjustments, etc.,); and maintain monthly close calendar.
  4. Oversee the daily operations of the accounting department.
  5. Review reconciliations created by the accounting team and provide guidance for accurate and consistent reconciliations.
  6. Manage various financial and retirement audits including keeping team on track and reviews data submissions. Interact directly with internal and external auditors.
  7. Create and provide ad-hoc reports for CFO, Controller and Corporate Finance team as required.
  8. Direct the maintenance and documentation of finance procedures & policies with a continual improvement approach.
  9. Partner with Corporate Finance group to administer the treasury functions including banking, debt, investment and cash management.
  10. Assist Regulatory Accounting group in the preparation of various regulatory responsibilities including 990, cost reports, governmental surveys.
  11. Ensure that payables are paid in a timely manner, with all reasonable discounts taken, and that non-patient receivables are collected promptly.
  12. Assist in the preparation of the organization's annual budget and long-range financial model.
  13. Collaborate with the Controller and other Finance leaders to design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department's goals and objectives.
  14. Provide professional expertise and guidance to all accounting related matters, including chart of accounts, AR, AP, GL, Payroll, tax, monthly, quarterly and annual closing process.
  15. Assist the Corporate Finance group to forecast short-range and long-range financial reporting and cash requirements and obligations
  16. Collaborate with Finance Department leaders on areas to improve business efficiencies and reduce costs.
  17. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab

Reporting Relat ionships

  1. Reports directly to Controller
  2. Responsible for oversight of General Accounting, Regulatory Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Payroll Department staff


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  1. A collaborative leader who is a skilled communicator. Must be adroit at effectively communicating with executives and staff. Ability to motivate the organization to higher performance.
  2. CPA with an advanced degree in business administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in Finance.
  4. Management experience including proven ability to recruit, retain, organize, motivate and develop a team of high caliber financial professionals who work collaboratively to produce outstanding results, experience in organizing and managing accounting departments with both onsite and remote staff.
  5. In-depth knowledge and understanding of accounting operations, financial reporting, audit preparation, internal controls and financial analyses.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in accounting, information and tax return preparation for non-profit health care organizations, philanthropic foundations and joint ventures.
  7. Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  8. Advanced, complex analytical ability to gather, analyze and interpret financial information to prepare a variety of statements and reports.
  9. Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement, cash/treasury operations and nonprofit tax issues.
  10. Budgeting and cost accounting experience desired.
  11. Evidence of the ability to promote and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  12. Unquestioned integrity and moral character - an individual who can be trusted without reservation to represent the values of the organization.
  13. High degree of personal "ownership" in the future success of the organization in which he/she works.
  14. Energetic work style and effectiveness working with people at all levels of the organization.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
