San Diego State University invites applications for one tenure-track (assistant professor) position and one tenured (associate professor) position in the area of Asian American Studies, to begin Fall 2022. The positions are part of a cluster hire to strengthen Ethnic Studies at SDSU, consistent with the CSU-systemwide Ethnic Studies General Education requirement, SDSU's Ethnic Studies graduate requirement, and SDSU's commitment to equity and inclusion. Successful candidates will have tenure homes in an appropriate department in the College of Arts and Letters, while the candidate hired at the associate/tenured level will be charged with leading the development and establishment of an Asian American Studies department to complement SDSU's existing Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, and Chicana/o Studies departments. Both positions will contribute to the expansion of Asian American Studies at SDSU, designated an AANAPISI-eligible institution.

SDSU is proud of our intentionality in serving Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) student populations. The candidate must commit to understanding who our APIDA students are and engaging with APIDA communities in our local areas. As per Fall 2020 enrollment data, our APIDA students are: 7.3% Asian American, 5.4% Filipino American, and 0.2% Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian. In the San Diego area, there are 16.7% Asian Americans and 0.4% Pacific Islanders/Native Hawaiians.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, or a related field by the time of appointment, with demonstrated evidence of Ethnic Studies knowledge and practice. While the topic of specialization within the field of Asian American Studies is open, we seek candidates with innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship, research, and teaching, whose work is theoretically rich, and anchored in critical, anti-racist, and decolonial perspectives. We further seek a scholar with evidence of commitment to community-based work who can engage with Asian American communities in the San Diego context, which is marked by its diversity, and its transborder/Pacific Rim context.

Successful candidates are expected to have a strong record of scholarly achievement and productivity (relative to career stage) and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Highly effective pedagogy in Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, and/or a willingness to build curriculum is highly desired, as is an active research agenda in Asian American Studies broadly defined. Candidates will be expected to teach introductory lower and upper division courses in Asian American Studies, as well as to develop upper division course offerings in Asian American Studies related to their areas of specialization, and the needs and context of the San Diego community. For the tenured Associate Professor line, we seek a skilled scholar with administrative and leadership experience who will be supported to lead the expansion and formalization of Asian American Studies at SDSU.

Desired qualifications for candidates include:

  • Intersectional and interdisciplinary scholarly focus in Asian American Studies
  • Research interests that center Asian American lives and communities and contribute to diversity and equal opportunity
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to sustained and collaborative work in service to Asian American communities in and beyond the university
  • Commitment to research that actively engages local Asian American communities and community interests
  • Commitment to student-centered teaching of a diverse student population in an APIDA-serving institution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of barriers and dynamics impacting underrepresented students and faculty in higher education, and/or Asian American communities and experiences on the West Coast
  • Demonstrated expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues in other ethnic studies departments and across the College of Arts and Letters to develop and promote justice-oriented scholarship and teaching
