A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) invites applications for an exempt Assistant Professor, General Dentist for the Special Care Clinic on the Mesa, Arizona campus. The Assistant Professor will conduct teaching, patient care, scholarly and service activities in support of the mission, goals and objectives of the School and University with primary responsibility for oversight of the Special Care Clinic and general dental patient care for special needs patients in the Advanced Care Clinic (ACC) and the education of predoctoral and AEGD residents to assure attainment competency that integrates biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences.
Job Duties:

  • General – conduct teaching, scholarship, service and patient care in support of the mission and goals of ASDOH and ATSU. Promote an atmosphere of respect, collegiality, commitment to diversity and social justice, and humanistic learning environment.
  • Teaching – In collaboration with the Director of Special Care Dentistry and other responsible faculty and administrators, provide clinical supervision and didactic instruction to predoctoral students and AEGD residents in general dentistry for special needs patients that integrates biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences, and effectively carry out supporting lecture, seminar, and other didactic instruction for the students and residents.
  • Patient Care and Treatment - Provide direct patient care in the ACC that supports community service, efficient clinic operations, student/resident education, or when in the best interest of the patient.
  • Administration – Assist in the administrative aspects of Special Care Clinic as assigned by the Director of Special Care Dentistry consistent with program goals and accreditation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Service – Participate in committees, faculty governance, professional societies and associations, community events, and provision of CE.
  • Scholarship - Establish and maintain scholarly and/or research activity in area of expertise, at level consistent with scheduled annual workload.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Teaching: As assigned by Director of Special Care Dentistry, provide clinical supervision and didactic instruction to predoctoral students and AEGD residents, including all aspects of general dentistry; mentor dental students and AEGD residents; assist in the coordination of the student’s clinical experiences in special care dentistry; assist in training assigned clinical faculty to achieve calibration for student formative and summative feedback; as assigned, teach didactic Special Care Dentistry course, and other course in pre- and post-doctoral curriculum;
  • Patient Care and Treatment: Provide direct patient care that supports community service, efficient clinic operations, student education, or when in the best interest of patient.
  • Administration: In collaboration with Director of Special Care Dentistry, assist in the development and implementation of clinic policy and procedure that is in compliance with accepted dental practice; assist in the provision of training to faculty, staff, resident and students on clinic policy and protocols; participate in monthly meetings with faculty & directors and review issues/plans/events and student achievement; monitor, report, and communicate student progress & deficiencies to responsible administrators on a periodic basis; assist in the management and supervision of assigned faculty and staff; assist with development and maintenance of accreditation and clinic quality improvement measures; complete administrative reports as needed; address student/resident/ issues at the program level.
  • Service: Participate in committees, faculty governance, professional societies and associations, community events, and provision of CE
  • Scholarship: Establish and maintain scholarly and/or research activity in area of expertise, at level consistent with scheduled annual workload.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Skills/Requirements:
  • DDS or DMD
  • Knowledge of clinical, general and special care dentistry
  • Familiarity with CODA requirements for special care dentistry
  • Clinical teaching experience preferred, GPR or AEGD, advanced training in special care
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills - able to deliver clear, concise directions and leadership
  • Excellent problem solving and crisis management skills
  • Good writing skills for grants, reports, and presentations
  • Strong Technology & Computer/software skills
  • Highly skilled in clinical general dentistry, including advanced procedures in prosthodontics, surgery, and digital dentistry
  • Highly skilled in managing special care patients including ID/DD, geriatrics, and vulnerable populations
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the skills to lead, supervise, and motivate others
