Department Information

The Service-Learning Program (SLP) supports curricular service partnerships between instructors and diverse community entities, including non-profits, local and state governments, and small and large businesses. Instructors on the IU Bloomington Campus teach over 300 service-learning courses annually, partnering with over 100 community partners in the Bloomington-Monroe County area. Over 3000 students annually complete these classes, providing service in their community that is integral to their academic coursework. Our community partners provide a Community Engaged Learning (CEL) experience for the student while receiving support for their work. The SLP is located within Indiana University Bloomington's Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL). CITL is a unit within the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education on the Bloomington Campus of Indiana University.

This 12-month position is responsible for designing and administering the Advocates for Community Engagement (ACE) program and reports to the Service-Learning Program (SLP) Director. The program supervises and trains undergraduate students who, as Cox Engagement Scholars, placed with public and private agencies, support faculty, students, and community partners in community engaged learning partnerships. is geared at developing professional skills, fostering wellness and development, and building community. This role frequently interfaces directly with students and community partner stakeholders involved in community engaged learning and collaborates with staff in their own department and the Cox Scholars Program on respective shared program goals.

Job Summary

Specific Department Responsibilities

  • Leads ACE/Cox Engagement Scholars program development and implementation
  • Selects, supervises, trains, and provides on-going support for 30 ACEs serving at community agencies
  • Develops and implements ACE learning and development program, including curricular and instructional design and delivery
  • Trains and supports ACEs to work with faculty to facilitate high-quality service-learning
  • Coordinates ACE supervision with on-site community partners
  • Develops and conducts program evaluation strategies to assess ACE program and student learning and development and job performance
General Responsibilities
  • Provides support and guidance to faculty in both individual and group settings regarding instructional support, pedagogical practice, classroom management, and federal regulations like FERPA and Title IX.
  • Determines additional support needs through consultation and designs resources to meet educational support needs.
  • Participates in educational resources initiatives in coordination with faculty and staff to improve student academic outcomes and improve classroom experience.
  • Trains teaching assistants, associate instructors, and graders in grading methods, responding appropriately to student concerns, and resolving complex issues.
  • Plans seminars, workshops, and other events for faculty, associate instructors, and students, as requested and appropriate by faculty.
  • Advances programs from individual consultations/workshops to larger-scale transformative events/projects when appropriate.
  • May oversee student testing administration and consult regularly with students regarding coordination of educational resources.
  • May serve as an informational resource and/or delegate tasks to administrative staff.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
