Accounting Specialist
The Finance & Accounting Department is seeking an Accounting Specialist who will report to the Manager of Finance Operations and will work across all aspects of Johns Hopkins University Press' Financial Department. This role will assist in financial reporting, payables, cash, and budgeting of all associated business functions (Books, Journals, Project MUSE, Distribution) to support ongoing operations across the Press. This position works collaboratively and develops close relationships with peers in the finance department, staff at JHU Press, vendors, and University's Administration staff.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare monthly financial dashboards for dissemination to management
  • Create data file extracts and manipulate data to prepare for general ledger uploads
  • Complete journal voucher entries and corrections to the general ledger
  • Initiate monthly financial report extracts for review and analysis
  • Track and reconcile purchase card payments
  • Assist in creation of budget reports, track budget expenditures, and assist with fiscal year close
  • Establish, deactivate, and maintain accounts and reports in finance database
  • Communicate with banks, general accounting, and other internal and external staff and vendors as needed to identify, research and resolve problems or discrepancies
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets and relational databases, to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports
  • Assist in the reconciliation of various general ledger accounts
  • Stand-in for other positions in department in case of long-term absence or departure
  • Assist in training new and temporary or seasonal staff and teammates in secondary responsibilities
  • Initiate payment requests in accounts payable and troubleshoot vendor set-up issues
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • High School Diploma/ GED required
  • Two years related work experience


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business or related field
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting theory and practices
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with peers, staff, and external customers

Classified Title: Accounting Specialist
Role/Level/Range: ATO 37.5/02/OE
Starting Salary Range: $17.59 - $24.80/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
