The School of Information Sciences (iSchool) seeks an Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Graduate Affairs to join our collaborative Student Affairs team to support our Master of Science/Library and Information Science (MS/LIS) students. iSchool Student Affairs supports students during their time at the school from the point of admission to transition to employment. Student Affairs provides this support through academic and career advising and through a variety of other initiatives and programs.

Primary Position Function/Summary:

The Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Graduate Affairs will provide to assigned students academic advising and other student services to support their academic and professional pursuits, facilitating opportunities for community and fostering an inclusive environment that promotes a balanced, healthy student experience.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Advising (60%)

  • Provide academic advising to assigned students on iSchool and University curricular and degree requirements.
  • Provide academic advising to both on-campus and online students one-on-one and in groups via face-to-face, phone, and Zoom.
  • Develop, update, and maintain advising strategies, student support models, and resources.
  • Conduct semesterly analysis on new student intake forms to help recognize shifting program demographics, anticipate desired course offerings, and monitor student career goals.
  • Coordinate and provide referrals to appropriate iSchool and campus contacts and resources to meet the academic and other needs of assigned students. These resources may include but are not limited to iSchool faculty, staff, and administrators as well as campus entities such as DRES, financial aid, Counseling Center.
  • Collaborate with career services colleagues to provide experiential learning and career development resources (such as practicum, internship, volunteer opportunities).
  • Develop and facilitate advising-centered programming to support student learning and to create community (registration, affinity groups, brown bags, teach talks).
  • Coordinate with Recruitment and Admissions staff on the review of admissions applications for assigned prospective students. Determine if further review is needed.

Student Services (35%)
  • Contribute to coordinating workshops, including those scheduled during non-standard workhours (e.g., time management, wellness strategies, citation management, etc.)
  • Collaborate with colleagues and faculty to support and retain students.
  • Support student group activities and planning by offering guidance on policies and best practices.
  • Develop, update, and maintain online advising and other information resources for orientation and for newly admitted students.

Other (5%)
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
  • Build partnerships and collaborate with other units on campus and engage in other relevant duties as assigned to enhance and support student achievement and success.

Position Requirements and Qualifications

Education:

Required: Bachelor's Degree.

Preferred: Master's Degree in Information Sciences, Information Management, higher education, student development, or a related field.

Experience:

Required: Experience in advising, student services, or a related area in higher education. Experience working with college/university students.

Preferred: Two years of experience advising and/or providing student services to graduate students. Background or experience with an area related to the professional outcomes of the School of Information Sciences graduates.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required: Demonstrated ability to work highly independently and collaboratively. Strong written and oral communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Well-developed customer service skills. Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with culturally diverse groups.

Preferred: Familiarity with University of Illinois policies and procedures related to students.

Salary and Appointment Information:This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, academic professional appointment with a 12-month service basis. The proposed start date is as soon as possible after the close date. Salary range for this position is commensurate with experience.
