The Department of Mass Communication is accepting applications for an Academic Advising Coordinator to lead and coordinate undergraduate student advising. Assist the department chair in student recruitment and retention.

Responsibilities and Duties

Serve as a designated adviser to MCOM undergraduate students (250-350). Provide training and assistance to faculty advisers. Create, distribute, and update advising information and forms for students and faculty both online and offline. Maintain up-to-date advising information on the department's website. Manage advising record for all students. Coordinate and lead transfer advising sessions in summer and winter. Coordinate equivalence evaluations of transfer courses. Assist department chair in resolving special advising cases. Review and process all applications to MCOM majors. Collaborate with Graduation Office and Registrar's Office for graduation clearance.


Prepare collateral materials for Open House, TU4U, and other new student recruitment opportunities. Coordinate and lead Open House and TU4U sessions. Represent the major at recruitment events, on or off-campus. Meet with prospective students. Maintain up-to-date program information on the department's website for prospective students. Serve as a liaison with the area community colleges. Maintain close working relationships with Academic Advising Center and the Admissions Office for articulation agreement and transfer equivalency evaluation process.

Qualifications and Skills

Required

  • Conferred bachelor's degree required at the start of employment.
  • Two or more years of full-time experience as academic adviser for undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to academic needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • High level of proficiency in Word, Excel, and file management in a cloud environment.
  • Demonstrated strength in organization, accuracy and attention to detail in task management.
  • Punctuality and reliability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Ability to work as a team with the department's leadership.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with student resources across campus.
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with multiple organizational units including Academic Advising, Graduation Office, and Admissions office.

Preferred:

  • Academic background or professional experience in mass communication or related fields.
  • Experience or knowledge of PeopleSoft, Student Success Collaborate, OneDrive, or Sales Force.
  • Strength in public speaking.
  • Experience in website content management.
  • Experience in training and supervising student workers.
