In early September of this year, there were approximately 10 million job openings in the US.

Scoring an interview to one of those jobs means being able to find them. And, these days, that means knowing how to find a job online.

The majority of jobs are now posted online. if you don't know where to look, you're missing out on valuable opportunities. Read this guide to find a job online and increase your chances of getting an interview.

1. Know Where to Look

There are plenty of places that advertise jobs online. Online places can include job boards or social networks and can be specific to a demographic, industry, or locality. 

Typically, jobs advertised on a job board or online will bring you to a company career site where you can apply directly for the job.

2. Update Your Resume & Online Profiles

Of course, you’re going to need the most recent information on your resume. Most of us don’t even look at our resume until it’s time for a job search, so it’s likely you’ll have stuff that’s out of date or skills that you should add. Your resume should be saved and sent to potential employers with a simple title containing your name, the word "resume", and the year.

The same should be said for online profiles. Our online profiles are how employers get to know us better when they’re interested in our resume and cover letter. Ensure your information is up to date.

3. Have a Great Cover Letter

When you’re applying online, as we do with most jobs these days, you don't meet the manager face to face until you get an interview. That means that you’re one among hundreds of other candidates and you need to find a way to stand out.

The best way to do that is through a great cover letter. That means that you don’t send generic cover letters. Make sure each cover letter is tailored to the specific job you’re looking for.

4. Follow Up

It’s easier for people to apply to jobs online and popular jobs will get hundreds if not thousands of applications. Just like you want to stand out with your cover letter, you can stand out by following up with the companies you’ve applied to. This shows that you’re proactive as well as truly interested in the position.

You can follow up with the hiring manager as soon as one week after submitting your application. If the job posting had a closing date, ensure you don't follow up until after that date.
